Modafinil vs Adderall
One is a Schedule II amphetamine with high addiction risk. The other is a Schedule IV wakefulness drug approved for sleep disorders. Here is how they differ, using the FDA labels.

How does modafinil compare to Adderall?
They are different drugs for different approved uses. Adderall is a Schedule II amphetamine approved for ADHD and narcolepsy, with a boxed warning for abuse, misuse and addiction. Modafinil is a Schedule IV drug approved to improve wakefulness in narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea and shift work disorder; it is not FDA-approved for ADHD. Its elimination half-life is about 15 hours, so one daily dose is typical.2,5
Why people switch from Adderall
Adderall forces your brain to release dopamine. That feels good, but it leads to crashes and dependency. Modafinil works differently: the FDA label says its mechanism of action is unknown.2
In my experience, it gives around 12 hours of clean focus without the euphoric high or the depressed crash. Many users with ADHD-style focus issues find modafinil to be an effective alternative. Compare modafinil's mild side effect profile to Adderall's harsh one.
Head-to-head comparison
How modafinil and Adderall actually work
Adderall is mixed amphetamine salts. It forces your neurons to dump dopamine and norepinephrine into the synapse. That is why it feels like your brain got plugged into a wall socket.
It is not opening anything up. It is flooding the system. And that flooding is exactly why the crash happens.
What goes up has to come down. When the drug wears off, dopamine levels drop below baseline and you feel it.
Modafinil works differently. The FDA label states that its mechanism of action is unknown.2 In my experience, it gives alert focus without the euphoric spike or the corresponding crash.
A 2015 systematic review in European Neuropsychopharmacology found modafinil improved decision-making, planning, and flexible thinking in non-sleep-deprived subjects without the stimulant side effect profile associated with amphetamines.
That is significant. Most cognitive enhancers either do not work on rested people or come with serious trade-offs.
For practical guidance on how much to take, the standard starting point is 100mg rather than jumping straight to 200mg.
Side effects: what you will actually feel
Adderall's side effect profile is well-documented and harsh for a lot of people. Appetite suppression is common and often severe. Some users forget to eat entirely. Insomnia is a real problem with XR formulations taken after midday.
Anxiety and irritability during the come-down are reported frequently. Longer-term use raises blood pressure and heart rate. Dependency risk is significant enough that the DEA classifies Adderall Schedule II, the same category as methamphetamine.3
Modafinil's profile is considerably milder. In the placebo-controlled trials in the FDA Provigil label, headache was the most common adverse reaction (34% on modafinil vs 23% on placebo), followed by nausea (11% vs 3%), nervousness, anxiety and insomnia.2 For comparison, the Adderall XR label reports loss of appetite in 33% of adults (vs 3% on placebo) and insomnia in 27% (vs 13%).5
The practical difference most users notice: Adderall users frequently report needing a recovery day after heavy use. Modafinil users typically do not.
That is my experience and what users commonly report; it has not been tested head to head in a trial. For a full breakdown of what to expect, see the side effects guide.
How long each one lasts
Adderall IR (immediate release) typically lasts about 4 to 6 hours in practice; the label itself does not state a duration. Most people on it need to redose at lunch. That means managing timing, managing the second come-up, and managing the second come-down.
Adderall XR is typically described as lasting 10 to 12 hours but has a two-phase release that many users feel as a noticeable dip mid-day.
Modafinil has an effective elimination half-life of about 15 hours (FDA label). One 200mg dose taken at 7am covers an entire workday and tapers off naturally by evening without a crash.
There is no redosing, no second-phase dip, and no timing anxiety. Armodafinil has a similar FDA-label half-life of about 15 hours, so the same rule applies: take it early or it can cost you sleep.
The practical takeaway: modafinil is a single-dose, full-day solution. Adderall requires planning around multiple doses and their timing.
Why I switched, and what I noticed
I first tried Adderall through a friend around 2012 when I was deep into a work project and needed to push through. Modafinil came a few years later when I started researching alternatives that did not leave me feeling wrecked the next day.
By 2014 I was testing vendors and documenting everything, which eventually became this site.
Adderall hits harder. There is no getting around that. The first hour feels like someone turned the brightness up on your brain. But by hour six you are irritable, your jaw hurts from clenching, and you know the crash is coming.
Modafinil is quieter. You do not feel "high." You just notice three hours have passed and you have been productive the entire time without thinking about it.
The difference is that modafinil does not borrow energy from tomorrow to pay for today.
The crash killed Adderall for me. I would get one great day of output and then lose half the next day recovering. With modafinil, I can take it Monday through Friday on a 5-on/2-off cycle and feel exactly the same on Friday as I did on Monday. No tolerance buildup at that schedule, no dependency. After twelve years of that pattern, I have never had to increase my dose.
If you are considering making the switch, start with Modalert 200mg. It is the closest thing to the consistent, clean focus that made me stop looking back. You can find it through the independent BuyModa review, or you can see where I order now.

Frequently asked questions
Is modafinil as effective as Adderall for focus?
There is no large head-to-head trial in healthy people. A 2015 systematic review found modafinil fairly consistently improves executive function in rested adults, with mixed results for attention and memory.1 In my experience, Adderall hits harder while modafinil feels smoother. Many professionals prefer modafinil's smoother, longer-lasting effects for deep work sessions.
Can I use modafinil for ADHD instead of Adderall?
Many people with ADHD-style focus issues find modafinil helpful for attention. See the modafinil dosage guide for details. Modafinil is not FDA-approved for ADHD. The FDA rejected a modafinil formulation (Sparlon) for children and adolescents with ADHD in August 2006.6 The current Provigil label records 3 cases of serious rash, including one possible Stevens-Johnson syndrome, among 933 children and adolescents in those ADHD trials, and states that modafinil is not approved for ADHD or for anyone under 17.2 Any off-label use in adults is a decision for your doctor.
Which modafinil brand should I try first?
Modalert is the most popular choice for Adderall switchers due to its consistent potency. Modvigil is a budget-friendly alternative. For longer duration, try Waklert or Artvigil (armodafinil). See the Modalert vs Modvigil comparison.
Where can I buy modafinil online?
The verified vendors for 2026 ship to the USA, UK, Australia, and Canada. All orders include delivery guarantees. Check legal status by country first.
What is the difference between modafinil and armodafinil?
Armodafinil is the R-isomer of modafinil. Its FDA label gives a half-life of about 15 hours, similar to modafinil, though some users report it feels longer-lasting. Both are Schedule IV; Adderall is Schedule II.
Can I switch from Adderall to modafinil cold turkey?
Talk to your physician first. Stopping Adderall abruptly after sustained use can cause fatigue and low mood while your dopamine system rebalances. Many people taper Adderall over a week or two before introducing modafinil, but this is a clinical decision, not one to make alone.
