Modafinil for night shift workers: dosing, timing, and sleep protection
Modafinil is FDA-approved for shift work sleep disorder. I used it during underground mining night shifts at Sunrise Dam. Here's what worked and what didn't.

Modafinil for night shift workers isn't some off-label experiment. It's FDA-approved for shift work sleep disorder, and there's a good reason for that. Night shift destroys your circadian rhythm and drags your cognitive performance down with it.
Your brain is wired to sleep when it's dark. Working through the night fights millions of years of evolution. Willpower alone can't fix that mismatch.
Killgore et al. 2008 showed that sleep deprivation impairs judgment, reaction time, and emotional regulation. If you've done nights, you already know this. The data just confirms what the 3am brain fog tells you every shift.
I spent years doing underground mining at Sunrise Dam gold mine in Western Australia. FIFO roster, 3:30am gym sessions, trying to function on broken sleep. Night shift wasn't a lifestyle choice for me. It was survival mode.
What Happened When I First Tried It on Nights
I first took modafinil during a night shift rotation in the early days. Somebody at the mine mentioned it, and I ordered some without doing much research. That was a mistake.
The focus hit hard. I felt alert and locked in. Then I spent four straight hours reorganizing my email inbox instead of doing the work I actually needed to do. Total waste of a shift.
Modafinil doesn't make you productive. It amplifies whatever you point it at. Point it at your inbox, and you'll have the cleanest inbox in the mine. Point it at your actual tasks, and you'll tear through them.
After that night, I started writing my three priorities on a sticky note before the modafinil kicked in. Simple fix. It changed everything about how I used the drug on shift.
How to Dose for Night Shifts
Take 100-200mg at the start of your shift. Not midway through. Not when you start feeling tired. At the start, before fatigue sets in.
Modafinil takes about 45-60 minutes to reach full effect. If you wait until 2am when you're already dragging, you've lost two hours of productive time and the drug will keep you wired well past your shift.
I've tested this over hundreds of night shifts across years of FIFO mining work. My protocol now is 100mg with food at the beginning of shift. One dose, no redosing, no "booster" halfway through.
The dosage guide covers the full range of options. For nights, simplicity wins. One dose taken early with food. Don't overthink it.
Protecting Your Sleep on the Other Side
The biggest risk of modafinil on night shift isn't the drug itself. It's what happens when you try to sleep afterward. Modafinil has an effective half-life of about 15 hours, and if you time your dose wrong, your daytime sleep is gone.
That's why you take it at the start of your shift, not the middle. A dose at midnight is still partly active by noon. A dose at 4am means you're still wired at 4pm.
Blackout curtains aren't optional. Your bedroom needs to be cave-dark. I also take 400mg of magnesium glycinate before my daytime sleep. Abbasi et al. 2012 showed magnesium supplementation improved sleep quality, and I've found it works well for shift workers specifically.
Your sleep hygiene on modafinil matters more than the drug itself. Get that wrong, and you'll dig yourself into a fatigue hole that no pill can fix. The shift work sleep disorder guide goes deeper on building a sustainable night shift routine.
Rotating rosters vs permanent nights
Night work splits into two different problems, and the dose strategy differs. Know which schedule you're actually fighting.
Permanent nights are the kinder pattern. Your body can hold a stable inverted rhythm, and doses become occasional support on the hardest shifts.
For permanent night workers, two to three dose nights weekly is the ceiling. First night back after days off is the classic slot.
Rotating rosters are the brutal pattern, and the one where shift work sleep disorder was named. Your clock never settles, and every rotation restarts the fight.
For rotators, spend doses on transition nights: the first one or two nights of each new block. Mid-block nights run on whatever rhythm you've scraped together.
Fast rotations, flipping every few days, deserve a hard look at the roster itself. No compound makes a 48-hour flip cycle healthy, and sometimes the real fix is a conversation about the schedule.
Both patterns share one rule: dose at shift start only. A mid-shift top-up always lands on your daytime sleep, and that sleep is the whole foundation.
Flipping back for your days off
The forgotten half of night work is the flip back to daylight life. Most night workers wreck their recovery days trying to live both schedules at once.
The standard trap: finishing your last night shift, sleeping all day, then lying awake all night. Day one off, gone.
The better flip: sleep short after that last shift, three or four hours only. It hurts, and it makes a normal early bedtime possible that evening.
From there, anchor hard to daylight rhythm. Morning light, meals at day-person times, and a firm bedtime the first two nights.
No modafinil on flip days or days off, at all. Doses are for shifts, and off days are where your sleep debt gets paid down.
In my experience, melatonin helps the first flip night. My melatonin timing guide covers the details.
If the sleepiness never lifts even on days off, that's beyond scheduling. Shift work sleep disorder is a recognized diagnosis, and a doctor can meet it properly.

Is modafinil approved for night shift workers?
Yes. Modafinil (sold as Provigil) has FDA approval specifically for shift work sleep disorder. It's one of three FDA-approved uses for modafinil, along with narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea.
When should I take modafinil for a night shift?
Take it at the very beginning of your shift with food. If your shift starts at 10pm, take your dose at 10pm. This gives you peak effect during the hardest hours and lets the drug start clearing before your daytime sleep window.
Will modafinil stop me sleeping after my shift?
It can if you time it wrong. Modafinil's effective half-life is about 15 hours. Take it at the start of your shift, not later in it. Take it too late in the shift, and you'll lie awake. Blackout curtains and magnesium glycinate before sleep also help.
Can I take modafinil every night shift?
You can, but I don't recommend it. Tolerance builds with daily use and the effect weakens over time. I'd suggest 2-3 shifts per week max. Save it for your hardest nights or the first night of a rotation when the circadian adjustment hits hardest.
Can I get diagnosed with shift work sleep disorder?
Yes, it's a recognized condition and the diagnosis pathway is straightforward: describe your roster, your sleep pattern, and the sleepiness costs to a GP, who may add a sleep diary or refer you onward. It matters because modafinil is approved for this exact condition in many countries, which turns your night-shift struggle into a legitimate prescription conversation rather than a grey-area workaround.
